1. Mandatory Physical Credit Card & Excessive Deposit

You must present a physical credit card in the driver's name. Mobile pay, debit cards, third-party cards, and cards with abbreviated names are often rejected. If you don't have one, the rental may be denied, or you may be forced to buy expensive local Super CDW (SCDW) insurance at the counter. A large deposit, which varies by company and car, is also blocked on your card.

2. Punitive Surcharges for Driving Experience and Age

Some companies charge drivers who have held their license for less than 12 months a large one-off inexperienced driver fee, regardless of the rental length. Many also charge young and senior drivers an age surcharge every day; the amounts and age limits vary by company.

3. Hidden Fees for Cross-Border Travel and Lost Items

Some companies charge a daily cross-border fee or a fine for crossing borders without approval, and may require you to tow the car back to Hungary at your own expense after a breakdown abroad. Fixed penalties for lost or damaged keys, tires and small accessories are also common, and the amounts vary by company. Motorway vignettes are often not included and must be bought separately.
